History of Charleston

The Androvette family settled Charleston in the late 17th century. They named their new settlement Androvetteville, but with the Industrial Revolution came a new brick factory and a name change to Kreischerville, after Archibald Kreischer, the man who built the Kreischer Brick Factory. The neighborhood name was finally changed to Charleston after Kreischer's son Charles Kreischer after the turn of the century. As the years went on, Charleston transformed from rural farmland to residential developments with the arrival of the Tides, an age 55+ housing community. In 2007, Bricktown Center, a large-scale retail development, was built and remains a major retail hub for the South Shore of Staten Island.

Charleston's Nearby Amenities

Unlike so many places in the five boroughs, Charleston remains an outpost of quietude, with a small population and a location far from the noise of the city. The Bricktown Center, however, allows access to premiere retail stores as well as restaurants and other services without having to leave the comfort of the neighborhood. Additionally, the 265-acre Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve provides visitors with the opportunity to hike, observe nature, and even go horseback riding. Clay Pits Park also has its own interpretive center in order to further educate the public on the Island's important natural resources. Charleston is home to one public school, and neighborhood school-age children attend other public and private schools in Tottenville and Rossville.
