Pleasant Plains Neighborhood Summary

Pleasant Plains is an upscale neighborhood with a real estate market that includes everything from stately homes on many acres to plenty of vacant land. Find out everything you need to know about finding a home in Pleasant Plains today.

History of Pleasant Plains

Thanks to the construction of the local train station when the SIR was extended to Tottenville during the mid-19th century, a community sprung up that was later called Pleasant Plains. As of the 2000 Census, the population of the neighborhood is around 5,000 residents. In the late 1800s, John Christopher Drumgoole purchased a large piece of land near Mount Loretto and built the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto, an orphanage with a farm that was once considered the biggest farm in all of New York State. One of Pleasant Plains' most recognizable landmarks is the Prince's Bay Lighthouse, which was built on the bluffs of Prince's Bay in 1864. While housing developments have sprung up in the neighborhood over the years, Pleasant Plains has maintained a sense of small-town living among oceanfront nature preserves.
